Adventure abounds in Baraboo
Baraboo is home to Wisconsin’s most-visited state park. It’s the hometown of the Ringling Brothers. It’s a cradle of conservationists. And it’s the perfect place for explorers in search of adventure.
Devil’s Lake has drawn travelers for centuries, its tranquil waters and soaring bluffs promising a serene getaway. The river flats that once served as the Ringling’s winter quarters is now the site of Circus World, which presents twice-daily shows under the big top each summer. Lovers of the outdoors flock to the International Crane Foundation and the Aldo Leopold Foundation, organizations whose global conservation work starts right here in Baraboo.
That’s just the beginning of the attractions. Don’t forget the train rides at Mid-Continent Railway Museum, the indoor shooting range at DEZ Tactical Arms, the free fun at the Ochsner Park Zoo, or the independently owned specialty shops of downtown Baraboo.
But before your calendar fills up, be sure to leave some time for Baraboo’s signature events. The fun begins April 11-12, when Baraboo Murder Mystery weekend fills downtown Baraboo with amateur sleuths looking to solve a fictional crime. It continues May 9, when the spring installment of Fair on the Square brings more than 100 vendors – not to mention food and live music – downtown.
Baraboo’s signature event is the Big Top Parade, a star-spangled celebration set for Saturday, June 13. Each summer, the community pays tribute to its favorite sons by staging an authentic circus parade through the downtown streets. It’s the highlight of a weekend full of circus fun.
During the summer, visitors can enjoy Concerts on the Square every Thursday evening, and farmers markets every Wednesday and Saturday morning downtown.
As summer turns to fall, this community celebrates its Germanic heritage with Baraboo Oktoberfest. This event, to be held September 19 at Circus World, will feature Oktoberfest beer from three local craft breweries, as well as live music from a Baraboo polka band.
Speaking of the breweries, no rundown of Baraboo’s premier destinations would be complete without a nod to its “Spirit Trail.” One brewery, Al. Ringling Brewing, built its beer hall concept around a long-lost Ringling family beer recipe. Another, Tumbled Rock Brewery and Kitchen, entices visitors with craft beverages, a delectable menu and outdoor games near the entrance to Devil’s Lake. The Baraboo Area also is home to three wineries and Driftless Glen Distillery, which pairs award-winning spirits with fine dining on the Baraboo Riverfront.
